Michael Grenfell was born and grew up in Bristol; although his ancestry is Cornish. He originally trained in Medical Science before taking a first degree in French Studies. Subsequent Masters and Doctoral studies included Language and Linguistics, Philosophy, and Education. He has worked as a teacher and lecturer for most of his professional life, and has held professorial posts in England (Southampton University), Ireland (Trinity College, Dublin) and Scotland.
